The five-minute catalog inspection
- Name the page. Is it an album, directory, supplier page, marketplace listing, spreadsheet, or copied collection?
- Find one stable identifier. Record a product code or direct item URL before comparing photos.
- Test the variant. Check whether color, size, material, included pieces, and quantity options belong to the exact item.
- Look for decision data. Find measurements, specifications, MOQ context, packing, QC status, and the quote route.
- Write the missing field. A catalog becomes useful when it tells you what to ask next.
Anatomy of a decision-ready product record
| Field | Buyer-friendly entry | Weak substitute |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Direct URL and unique product code | “Popular item” |
| Variant | Named color, size, material, version | A mixed photo collage |
| Quantity | Test quantity and applicable MOQ | “Wholesale available” |
| Price route | How and where to request a dated quote | An unexplained number |
| Evidence | Requested angles, measurements, QC status | One front image |
| Logistics | Packing, packed-weight and carton questions | “Worldwide shipping” without inputs |
A catalog image has a limited job
What it can support
Visible product observations
Shape, color under that lighting, construction details, visible components, labels, and the angles actually shown.
What it cannot settle
Commercial and transaction claims
Current stock, legal identity, authorization, exact material, final price, MOQ, shipping, protection, and the item you would later receive.
How to compare two catalog entries
Create one row for each exact item rather than judging a whole website from one listing. Use the same columns: code, variant, dimensions, source, MOQ, quote basis, QC status, packing, shipping inputs, last checked date, and open questions. A result with a higher visible price may be easier to evaluate if it includes item-specific measurements and packing context; a lower number with no basis is not yet comparable.
Watch for copied or disconnected entries
Repeated photos are not proof of who controls the item. Compare account paths, watermarks, codes, captions, contact details, and the direct source. If the catalog sends one code but the reply quotes another, treat it as a different product until the mismatch is resolved.
Turn catalog gaps into an inquiry
This is a preparation template. Send it only to the responsible contact you have independently identified.
Catalog save rule
Keep an entry when it makes the next question more precise. Remove it when it survives only because the photos are attractive.
While reading a catalog
Clarify the entry before contacting anyone
Use these answers when a code, variant, source, update date, price basis, or inquiry route is missing or unclear.
